SHIVARPANA -DANCE AND MUSIC FESTIVAL AT HEBRI

The Kalatheera organisation hosted a cultural festival ‘Shivarpana – 2013’ on the Ardhanareeshwara Temple premises at Hebri town in Udupi district on March 16 and 17.
The festival is being sponsored by the Union Ministry of Culture, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu; and the Departments of Kannada and Culture, and Tourism.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Uday Kumar Shetty, trustee of Kalatheera, said that the fest would start with a cultural caravan, a procession of artistes and lovers of performing arts at 5.30 p.m. After the inaugural function by renowned Odissi dancer Ratikant Mohapatra, the fest would begin with a Hindustani vocal concert by Sangeeta Katti Kulkarni at 6.35 p.m. This would be followed by Bharatnatyam by Aswath and troupe, Gotipua by Lakshmipriya Gotipua Nrutya Kendra, Odisha and light music by playback singer Rameshchandra and Karunakara Rao party.
The second session would begin at 8.30 p.m. It would have cultural programmes such as ‘Dollu Kunitha’ and ‘Pooja Kunitha’ by Takappa and troupe, followed by ‘Beesu Kamsale Nagari’ by Kumaraswamy and troupe, Bharatnatyam by Sanathana Natyalaya, and Odissi dance by Uday Kumar Shetty and ensemble, Bangalore.
The second day’s programme would begin with a seminar on ‘Folk arts and classical arts – An introduction to Desi and Marga traditions in our culture’ at 11 a.m. The seminar would be inaugurated by vocalist R.K. Padmanabha.
There would be lecture-demonstration by Kalbelia folk dancers, Rajasthan; Gotipua traditions, Odisha; Ratikant Mohapatra, Odisha; and Shivaji Rao, Tamil Nadu.
The cultural programmes would begin with a Carnatic vocal concert by R.K. Padmanabha at 6.30 p.m. It would be followed by flute fusion music by Padmanab Bapu and ensemble; Kalbelia dance by Lokakala Kalbelia Samiti, Rajasthan; devotional songs by Shankar Shanbhogue; Karagattam folk dance by Shivaji Rao and group, Thanjavur; semi-classical dance by Kalatheera; Bharatnatyam by Nritya Niketana Kodavoor; and Carnatic vocal by S. Sangeetha from Mysore.
